We're officially a week away from Barbie's release, and a huge highlight amidst the film's perfectly pink promotional tour is its star-studded soundtrack.
First announced in May, the Barbie soundtrack name-dropped a bunch of pop stars including Dua Lipa (who plays a mermaid Barbie in the film), Charli XCX, Lizzo, and K-pop group Fifty Fifty. Since then, we've been blessed with a bunch of Barbie tunes, from Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice's "Barbie World" to Ryan Gosling's scene-stealing "I'm Just Ken." Today we've been gifted with another Barbie bop, thanks to none other than Billie Eilish and her brand-new music video for "What Was I Made For?"
Slated to appear in the film, the track is an cry for metaphysical meaning, in the same vein as the mortality crisis faced by our titular Barbie (Margot Robbie) in the trailer. It ponders being stuck in a plastic body, Barbie's purpose, and the value of existing when you don't know why you were even created in the first place. The teen angst is too real.
SEE ALSO: 'Barbie' is turning London pinkDirected by Eilish, the music video sees the artist dressed as a Barbie herself as she unpacks a box filled with doll costumes while rain begins to pour on her. Again, the existential angst is Too! Real! What exactly is this movie about again? Co-written with her brother FINNEAS, "What Was I Made For?" may be Barbie's lament, but it hits home for anyone who's ever wondered if life in plastic is actually all that fantastic.
Barbie: The Album releases on all streaming platforms July 21.
