SPRINGFIELD, COLORADO: A Colorado driver reportedly attempted to trade places with his dog after being pulled over for speeding. The incident reportedly took place in Springfield, a town of about 1,300 people on the state’s Eastern Plains, on Saturday, May 13. A police officer said that he watched the man maneuvering inside the car before getting out on the passenger side.
Authorities shared that the man denied being behind the wheel and showed clear signs of being drunk, as per NBC News. The driver reportedly ran off from the responding officer when asked about how much he had had to drink but was caught within about 20 yards (18 meters). He was later taken to the hospital before being arrested on suspicion of charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and driving while ability impaired as well as for previous warrants for his arrest.

‘Must have been really drunk’
The Internet was quick to respond to the incident and took to Facebook to react to the situation. “There are a couple things you can try blaming on the dog… this is not one of them,” one user wrote. “Whatever he was drinking...he needs to leave that alone,” another added. “He must have been really drunk to have that make any sense,” a third user commented.

It’s quite a tail alright!” one said. “Worth a try and a good laugh for everyone involved…but no,” one argued. “Lol had to have had enough cognitive thinking to pull that off,” wrote another. Twitter users also took to their accounts to comment to on the situation. “The human race makes me ashamed,” one tweeted. “they really are a man’s best friend,” added another. “Shame he isn't a best friend to mans best friend,” one commented. A fourth user said, “How drunk do you have to be to think anyone will believe your dog was driving? Because that’s not regular drunk” while another mentioned, “That’s some crazy weed bro.”

Several social media users also responded to the bizarre incident by sharing a barrage of hilarious memes on Twitter. “Air Bud walked so Toto can drive,” one wrote alongside a TikTok video of a dog behind the wheel. “What the officer saw when he pulled up,” wrote another with a meme of a side-eyeing dog. “The dog,” one simply captioned a close-up video of a pooch.
One user shared a GIF from the animated show, ‘Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines’ with a caption that read, “my mans said” while another joked, “they really arrested the dog” alongside a photo of a dog inside a cage within a police car. One funny video to depict the dog’s state came with the caption, “the dog when the officer asked who's drunk” while another meme simply read, “FREE HIM.”
