Garth Brooks said the offer was a present from his wife, Trisha Yearwood, on their anniversary

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: Garth Brooks recently revealed during a press conference that his wife, Trisha Yearwood, offered to change her last name to his, which he declined. The 'Ropin' the Wind' album singer spoke about the incident during a meet on Thursday, June 15, in Nashville, Tennessee, where he announced a new station on his SEVENS Radio Network on TuneIn Radio.

Brooks said that Yearwood, who rose to fame with her 1991 debut single 'She's in Love with the Boy', offered the gesture as a present while they celebrated their anniversary. “(Yearwood) was sweet enough for our anniversary last year to have the documents where her official last name was Brooks,” he said, per Today, adding, “I declined it.”

Garth Brooks would be fine 'changing his name' to Yearwood

“Jack Yearwood had two daughters,” Brooks reportedly said, adding, “That Yearwood name is Trisha. I’d be fine changing my name to Yearwood. Tradition doesn’t count here. What counts is when you have two celebrities, don’t have one swallow the other.” The subject came up when a reporter asked about his wife's involvement in the new station.

Garth Brooks wants to launch a woman-centric station

Brooks shared that he hoped to launch a women-centric station called BABE after sharing his wife's proposal, in which his wife would have more involvement. “It’s the bad a** b****es of entertainment,” he said, adding, “I’d love to see her heavily involved in that channel.”

'We aren’t like a magical couple'

Yearwood opened up on her relationship with Brooks to SheKnows in 2021. “We aren’t like a magical couple. We have our days, right? But we are best friends,” she said at the time, adding, “I think the groundwork was laid by being friends for such a long time before we were a couple.” Brooks and Yearwood met in 1987 while recording a demo track together. They got married after almost 18 years in 2005.

Yearwood also spoke about being a “bonus parent” to Brooks’ three daughters, Taylor, 30, August, 29 and Allie, 26 during the interview. “It was a gift that I received from Garth and the girls of having them in a life that I didn’t know I was missing. I can’t imagine my life without them," she said.

'Smartest decision on her part'

Twitter users also reacted to the news. A user tweeted, "One of my greatest honors in life was to take my husband’s last name. Should have allowed it. But I’m not famous. What do I know?" Another wrote, "He prob does not want the competition." A third wrote, "I think he has the right to do as he wants. He is the one to pay for his mistakes not anyone else. I am glad she kept her name. She made fame under that name so why not keep her name? She could have added his last name to her name. Who are we to judge others it’s not my job." Another user opined, "Mrs Yearwood is just fine. That's what Garth calls her." "Smartest decision on her part," said another.
