Many commenters used this as an opprtunity to bash Subway for, calling them tasteless, but some pointed out the humor behind the sign

RINCON, GEORGIA: A subway in Georgia has found itself embroiled in controversy after reportedly putting up a sign that appeared to make fun of the perished submersible, Titan, which claimed five lives. A message written on a signboard said, “Our subs don't implode,” taking a dig at OceanGate’s submersible that imploded on June 18 soon after beginning its journey into the Atlantic.

With the vessel, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, French Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani British businessman Shahzadad Dawood and his son Sulaiman Dawood also died. All of them were going to see the site of the Titanic ruin after paying $250,000 per head.

‘Horrible and hurtful’

Many on the internet accused Subway of being cold-hearted toward the people who lost their lives during the sea voyage. A Reddit user commented, “Is this tasteless? Well yeah, it's subway.” Another user said, “I can't believe they sank that low.” “Our subs are also made from questionable, mediocre ingredients,” a third user remarked.

“Horrible and hurtful,” a fourth one noted. “Your subs don’t implode, but your marketing plan of having a child molester as a spokesman definitely imploded your business model,” a fifth one added while referring to convicted sex offender Jared Fogle.

Twitter was also full of criticism for Subway, with one person tweeting, “That sign is in poor taste, but then again so is subway sandwiches.” Another person said, “But they do taste like carbon fiber and aren’t endorsed by NASA.” “They may not implode, but they don't taste great, either. I'll take Jersey Mike's,” a third person tweeted. A fourth one added, “We live in a sick sick world.”

‘It was made of frickin scrap metal’

However, some did not find the phrase used by Subway hurtful as a user posted on Reddit, “It's not tasteless, after everything I have seen they deserved it. you can't be that reckless, neglectful, and comprehend the issues you're getting blown up for and then expect people to care when you die. I think the internet was justified in their mockery of these guys.... also subway isn't that bad there's no one really competing with them all other sandwich places specialize in warm sandwiches.”

A tweet read, “If Oceangate can look for a new pilot a day after the sub went missing subway can surely joke about it.” Another tweet added, “It was made of frickin scrap metal of course this is funny. RIP to the billionaires but yeah, it’s funny.”

Meanwhile, Subway released a statement after the lambasting and said to Fox News Digital, “We have been in contact with the franchise about this matter and made it clear that this kind of comment has no place in our business. The sign has since been removed.”
