Jason Mraz believes he owes his open and proud sexual orientation to his ex-wife

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a recent interview, Jason Mraz said that accepting his sexuality was aided by overcoming the "guilt" and "shame" surrounding his divorce from ex-wife Christina Carano.

In 2023, the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter—who came out in 2018 while married to Carano—was included on the Out100 list, which honors “the year’s most influential and pioneering LGBTQ+ figures.”

Mraz thanks his ex-wife for encouraging him to explore his sexuality, though the two separated in June 2023 after eight years of marriage.

Jason Mraz had sexual experiences with men while dating Christina Carano

In a recent interview with GLAAD, Mraz discussed how his divorce from Carano complicated his process of coming to terms with his own bisexuality.

The 'Have It All' singer, 46, said, "I had to play out a lot of other scenarios before I arrived here. It’s both hard to do those and hard to unravel those, and what I’m basically describing is a divorce, you know?"

"And that’s very hard. You carry a lot of shame and guilt," Mraz added.

According to Mraz, discovering his true identity on his own was an outcome of their divorce.

Following his 2015 marriage to Christina Carano, Mraz revealed in a 2018 Billboard interview that he engaged in sexual activity with men even while they were dating.

Back then, he admitted to wondering if he was gay, but Carano clarified it by referring to him as a "two spirit."

Mraz said in the interview, "She calls it ‘two spirit,’ which is what the Native Americans call someone who can love both man and woman. I really like that."

Mraz was engaged to singer-songwriter Tristan Prettyman before he married Carano, but they agreed to hold off on getting married until homosexual marriage was "legal and equal."

They called it quits less than six months into their engagement, per the New York Daily News.

Jason Mraz spent time healing past relationships

In 2018, the 'I'm Yours' singer disclosed that he devoted a significant amount of time to reconciling previous relationships after coming out as a member of the LGBTQ community, per the New York Post.

Mraz, who is a competitor on Season 32 of 'Dancing With the Stars', claims that his acceptance of his new self has also been aided by his competition for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.

"All day, you’re looking at yourself in the mirror, and that can be hard for anybody, any human, to accept themselves looking in the mirror," Mraz remarked.

"On top of it, then my partner is asking me to move in ways that I’ve never moved before, and my reaction is, ‘I look silly.' "

Elsewhere in the interview, Mraz stated that it was "nice to be acknowledged" and that this year's Out100 list was "as hot as the Billboard 100!" The most significant figures in the LGBTQ+ community are honored on this list.

Mraz, who is presently competing with partner Daniella Karagach on season 32 of 'Dancing With the Stars', claimed that the producers of the show were initially drawn to his dance-heavy music video for 'I Feel Like Dancing'.

The musician admitted that while he has been enjoying the journey, he didn't expect the experience to be as emotional as it has been.
