Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher teases Tottenham midfielder James Maddison over the controversial disallowing of Luis Diaz's goal and public calls for a replay.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has teased Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison that the two clubs still need to complete a replay of their controversial fixture earlier this season.

Spurs beat the Reds 2-1 at the end of September to maintain their impressive start under new head coach Ange Postecoglou.

However, the match could have panned out very differently. After being reduced to ten men early on due to Curtis Jones' dismissal, Liverpool thought they had taken the lead against the run of play when Luis Diaz picked out the bottom corner. The goal was wrongly ruled out for offside by the on-pitch officials, while a communication error led to VAR failing to overturn the decision.

In the days that followed the loss, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was understandably furious with the decision and revealed his belief that the fair outcome would be for the game to be replayed. Spurs counterpart Postecoglou disagreed with this assessment and Klopp had little support from the wider footballing community.

Maddison was named player of the match by Sky Sports for his scintillating performance in Tottenham's 2-0 win against Fulham on Monday, scoring his first home goal since joining from Leicester City over the summer.

The midfielder was interviewed by Carragher post-match, and the ex-defender couldn't resist trying to wind Maddison up about the replay request.

"You've got a big game on Friday [away at Crystal Palace], you've got a long way to go, you've done really well - how do you think you'll get on in that replay against Liverpool?" Carragher joked.

Maddison saw the funny side of the question and replied: "I just knew from the tone of Carra's voice that was coming!"

Tottenham remain unbeaten though their opening nine games of the new Premier League season, winning seven and drawing two, and the 23 points accumulated by Postecoglou is the most of any manager across their first nine matches in the Premier League.

The Australian has also trumped the start made to last season by Antonio Conte - the fiery Italian led Spurs to 23 points from their first ten outings, with their eighth game of the season providing a 3-1 loss at north London rivals Arsenal. That's a hurdle Postecoglou has already overcome, earning a deserved 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium.
