Phil Nevin will not return next season as manager of the Los Angeles Angels after missing the Major League Baseball playoffs for the ninth consecutive season, the team announced Monday.

Nevin took over as interim manager in June of 2022 following the firing of Joe Madden and guided the Angels to a 46-60 mark in a 73-89 season, then signed a one-year deal for 2023 and the team again finished 73-89.

With 2021 American League Most Valuable Player Shohei Ohtani and veteran star slugger Mike Trout, the Angels had hopes on their first playoff appearance since 2014, but faded after a strong start.

Japanese star Ohtani, a pitcher and slugger when healthy, is expected to be sought after by numerous clubs in the off-season.

The Angels have reached the post-season only once since 2009, the last season they won a playoff series.

They have not appeared in the World Series since defeating San Francisco in 2002.
