LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: From what is brewing, there may be a strained relationship between Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo. It has been revealed that Sabrina Carpenter, Rodrigo's supposed rival, will make appearances during the Latin American leg of Swift's Eras Tour. Swift hinted at adding "LOTS more" international dates to the tour soon. Carpenter, 24, expressed her excitement on Instagram, stating, "trying to process this but alas i shant."
Swift's announcement added fuel to rumors of a major feud between her and the 20-year-old ‘Driver's License’ singer. "Really thrilled to tell you this!! Mexico, Argentina and Brazil: We are bringing The Eras Tour to you this year!” the ‘Blank Space’ singer, 33, wrote in an Instagram post on May 2.
‘Kindest individual in the whole world’
Rodrigo has been a devoted fan of Swift since she was young and even expressed her excitement when the ‘Anti-Hero’ artist gifted her a ring in March 2021. During an interview with SiriusXM, the star of ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ described Swift saying, "She is absolutely the kindest individual in the whole world."
Both songwriters have publicly expressed their admiration for each other on social media. However, things took a turn when Swift and music producer Jack Antonoff received writing credits on Rodrigo's song ‘Deja Vu from her Sour’ album, which Rodrigo had acknowledged was heavily influenced by Swift.
In 2021, when Rodrigo was named Time Magazine's Entertainer of the Year, she expressed frustration, stating, "It was really frustrating to see people discredit and deny my creativity.” A TikToker pointed out that Swift and Rodrigo didn't take any photos together at the 2023 Grammys, despite both attending. The TikToker also highlighted that Swift did take photos with Sabrina Carpenter, who has been publicly referred to as Rodrigo's "frenemy."
‘There’s no solid proof’
Tensions between Rodrigo and Carpenter date back to 2021 when rumors circulated that the ‘Nonsense’ singer started dating Rodrigo's ex-boyfriend Joshua Bassett, 22. “So all in all, there’s no solid proof that the two are in a feud, but for them to go from being so supportive publicly of each other to nothing, definitely has me curious,” Rodrigo added.
Rodrigo's hit song ‘Driver's License’ is widely believed to be about Carpenter and Bassett's romance, as she sings lyrics like, "You're probably with that blond girl / Who always made me doubt / She's so much older than me / She's everything I'm insecure about."
In March, Carpenter and Shawn Mendes sparked dating speculation, though Mendes later denied the claim. Rodrigo is currently dating Adam Faze, and Bassett confirmed his membership in the LGBTQIA+ community in June 2021. As for Swift, she is dating Matty Healy, a member of The 1975, following her breakup with her six-year boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
