Sean Rubio is TFC's new technical director.

Toronto FC appointed Sean Rubio as the new technical director, setting him up to work closely with club general manager Jason Hernandez in a bid to put the Reds back on the winning track.

This isn't Rubio's first rodeo with the Canadian side, first acting as Toronto's senior manager of scouting and budget from 2016-2020 while being part of the 2017 team that captured the first-ever domestic in MLS history.

The roles of a technical director and general manager may seem similar, propelling Rubio and Hernandez will be working hand-in-hand as the offseason begins soon for Toronto.

"Rubio will be responsible for managing the infrastructure and operation of the club's scouting department, in addition to working closely with General Manager Jason Hernandez on the strategy and execution of player acquisitions across the First Team and Toronto FC II," a club statement read.

Rubio has been involved in MLS font office roles since the early 2010s, with stops at San Jose Earthquakes before his first spell with the Reds and with Austin FC prior to reuniting with Toronto this week.

"We are excited to welcome Sean Rubio to our front office team as the new Technical Director. He has experienced success at multiple clubs in Major League Soccer and worked extensively within the unique league ecosystem ranging from expansion, MLS SuperDraft selections, to TAM and DP target acquisitions," said Hernandez in a release.

"Sean's understanding of MLS and more specifically, Toronto FC, makes him an excellent fit to boost our capabilities as a front office group. His quality of character and passion for our club and city will prove to be invaluable as we work towards 2024 and beyond."

"I couldn’t be happier to be joining Toronto FC," added Rubio in a release. "The club has supportive ownership and a passionate fanbase. I’m looking forward to working closely with our players and staff to bring success to the city of Toronto."

Toronto's dismal 2023 campaign comes to a close on October 21 as they take on Orlando City in what will be club captain and legend Michael Bradley's last game for TFC at BMO Field. The disappointing season, in which TFC has tallied a measly 22 points from 33 games played so far as they sit in last place in the league, will more than likely see a busy offseason for Hernandez and Rubio as they look to help the Reds return to MLS Cup playoffs.
