Tottenham Hotspur are looking to tie club captain Son Heung-min down to a new long-term contract. Son's current deal expires in 2025.

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to tie club captain Son Heung-min down to a new long-term contract, sources have confirmed to 90min.

The South Korea international is into his ninth season at Spurs and is sixth on the club's all-time list of scorers. Though Son has over 18 months left to run on a deal that runs until 2025, 90min understands that Tottenham are determined to hand him an extension.

Sources have told 90min that an agreement is expected to be reached by Christmas, though it's possible that negotiations could be finalised within a matter of weeks.

Son turned 31 over the summer but has made a fine start to the 2023/24 season, notably scoring a hat-trick in Spurs' 5-2 win at Burnley earlier in September.

New head coach Ange Postecoglou made Son the club's new captain in place of Hugo Lloris prior to the start of their Premier League campaign.

90min understands that Tottenham wanted to see how Postecoglou and Son got on before discussing a new contract, and the pair have struck up a great relationship allowing talks to quickly proceed.

Speaking at a fan forum event on Tuesday night, Postecoglou discussed his admiration of Son.

"Everyone knows he's a fantastic footballer but he's just a brilliant human being. For any sort of manager, when you're looking for leaders in a group and they're all different types, firstly what kind of person are they is really important when setting up a team." Postecoglou said.

"Even from afar, even before I joined the club, obviously I've known Sonny for a long time because being from that part of the world myself and working in Asia and the exposure I had to his standing in the community there, you can tell he was respected. Whether it was teammates or opponents, everyone spoke really highly of him. I think he was the perfect embodiment.

"You have to remember we've got a young group at the moment, a really young group. In our starting XI we've got four or five where it's their first year in the Premier League, 20 or 21 years old, they've come into a massive football club, it's a big challenge for them and it can be overwhelming depending on the dressing room you walk into.

"I think Sonny and [new vice-captains] James Maddison and Cuti Romero, they've embraced that leadership role. All the boys, irrespective of whether they've been here two months or ten years, they feel really comfortable in there. That's because of the people who are the leaders, not necessarily the players but the people."
