Virgil van Dijk has revealed three key things that Liverpool need in order to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.
Having endured a disappointing 2022/23 campaign, finishing outside of the top four for the first time since 2016, Liverpool have looked back to their best in the early months of the current season. Heading into the November international break, the Reds sit second in the Premier League table, just one point adrift of Man City.
With the pair due to face each other after the international break on November 25, a win for Liverpool could spark another heavyweight battle for the title between Jurgen Klopp's side and Pep Guardiola's men.
Speaking to the press about Liverpool's title challenge after Sunday's win against Brentford, captain Van Dijk was keen to point out the three things his team need in order to challenge Man City's dominance at the top of the league.
"I looked in the dressing room [on Sunday] and it felt like we were the under-23s. But still we have the quality, if you are good enough you are old enough. But we need to see [if we can challenge Man City], we need a bit of luck, we need no injuries and need consistency," he said.
"Overall this season we have been doing well but the season is not decided in November and there could be so many twists and turns, we all know that. You have all these aspirations, dreams, goals before the season and you want to compete until the very end in every competition we are in. That is definitely the case at the beginning of the season and then you grow into a season.
"There is still so much to play for. It's going well, but if we had not got a result against Brentford we would have been in that downward spiral - from the outside world, of course - because you don't set it up nicely for the game after the international break. But we finished on a positive feeling."
