Tom Holland had earlier taken aim at Martin Scorsese over the latter's disapproval of Marvel films, saying, 'He's never made one'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Martin Scorsese will reportedly soon make a movie on Jesus Christ. The veteran filmmaker earlier directed the controversial ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ in 1988. Scorsese announced his future project during a recent Rome conference at the Vatican.

According to Variety, the 80-year-old said, “I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus. And I’m about to start making it.” Scorsese has not yet made clear who will play the titular role but speculations point to Tom Holland.

‘That’s a real improvement!’

Le Cinephiles shared on Twitter, “Tom Holland is in talks to play Jesus in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming movie ‘JESUS’,” attracting tons of mixed reactions. A user said, “They’re waiting for Jesus Christ and the Multiverse of glory.” A second user commented, “Nah. Ewan McGregor would be perfect casting to play Jesus.” “Playing Spiderman to playing Jesus! That’s a real improvement!” a third quipped.

A person wrote, “If Tom Holland is being cast as Jesus, then to me this movie sounds like it's gonna be a comedy. Which is why I'm not taking this news seriously.” Another remarked, “Would've been dope if it was Christian Bale, he looked great as Jesus back in 1999 for ‘Mary, Mother of Jesus’ and as he usually does he played the role well. Older and wiser with a more hardened craft he'd be excellent in the role, especially with Scorsese at the helm.” “Would much rather see a person of color play the role,” a tweet added.

‘He's never made one’

This comes after not very long ago, Holland called out Scorsese for his criticism of superhero movies. The ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ star told The Hollywood Reporter in late 2021, “You can ask Scorsese, 'Would you want to make a Marvel movie?' but he doesn't know what it's like because he's never made one."

"I've made Marvel movies and I've also made movies that have been in the conversation in the world of the Oscars, and the only difference, really, is one is much more expensive than the other,” he said.

‘It comes with different levels of pressure’

“But the way I break down the character, the way the director etches out the arc of the story and characters — it's all the same, just done on a different scale. So I do think they're real art,” the 26-year-old actor said. “When you're making these films, you know that good or bad, millions of people will see them whereas when you're making a small indie film if it's not very good no one will watch it, so it comes with different levels of pressure.”

“I mean, you can also ask Benedict Cumberbatch or Robert Downey Jr or Scarlett Johansson — people who have made the kinds of movies that are 'Oscar-worthy' and also made superhero movies — and they will tell you that they're the same, just on a different scale,” Holland added.
