LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Shakira and Gerard Pique were rumored to be in an open relationship before cheating allegations precipitated a contentious custody arrangement for their two children. The former couple announced their split in June 2022, not long after 36-year-old former FC Barcelona and Spain star Pique was charged with adultery related to the singer.
Pique, who has since started dating the model Clara Chia Marti, later denied rumors of an affair, saying there was "no infidelity on his part." The former pair, according to Spanish broadcaster Jose Antonio Aviles, had a three-year open relationship that was mutually agreeable until their split. Aviles claimed that they had an understanding where "you do what you want and I do what I want, but in the face of the media, we are still a couple," according to El Nacional de Catalunya.
Who is Jose Antonio Aviles?
Jose Antonio Aviles is a Spanish journalist who gained notoriety through his work as a consistent contributor to the program 'Viva la vida'. He joined the show after Toi Moreno and Emma Garcia switched roles as hosts and before Raul Prieto's debut. Aviles' expertise is in the tabloid press, but he is predominantly known for having significant and frequent altercations with coworkers or newsmakers.
His earliest television appearances were on the regional PTV Cordoba channel, and his occasional participation in the RTVE show 'La mañana de La 1' led to his first national appearances. He has also been observed in 'Espejo público' discussing current affairs. Additionally, he works with Semana magazine. How did the open relationship rumors begin?
Rumors of an open relationship are thought to have originated from Pique's close friends and family, many of whom are reported to have been shocked by his ex-partner's allusions to infidelity. "The footballer's entourage was surprised by Shakira's statement," Aviles stated. "He has been annoyed to find out from the press," Pilar Vidal, a fellow journalist, said, continuing, "Piqué does not want speculation that the reason for the breakup was infidelity. He was surprised by the statement, because the one who takes the initiative is her."

'Perhaps there is nothing left'
After the split, Shakira subsequently relocated to Miami after being granted full custody of their two children, Milan and Sasha, and has been reportedly connected to Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton. The Colombian singer declared her split with Pique on Instagram in June 2022, but for some, the news was not fully unexpected. Apparently, the couple was on the verge of splitting, with sources saying Pique had cheated on the celebrity, as per Spanish tabloids. El Periodico, a Spanish news outlet, even claimed that the pair had been living apart for weeks following the pop star's eviction of him from the family home. Both parties avoided discussing allegations of cheating, although journalist Emilio Perez reported, "(Shakira) has made the decision to separate. That is so. It has happened. That is why there is distance. Perhaps there is nothing left, but that (infidelity) has passed."
'Not like a regular separation'
When her romance with the soccer player ended, Shakira subsequently discussed how challenging her life had been in an interview for the October 2022 issue of ELLE magazine. She expressed, "Oh, this is really hard to talk about personally, especially as this is the first time I've ever addressed this situation in an interview. I've remained quiet and just tried to process it all. Um, and yeah, it's hard to talk about it, especially because I'm still going through it, and because I'm in the public eye and because our separation is not like a regular separation." "And so it's been tough not only for me, but also for my kids. Incredibly difficult," added the 'Hips Don't Lie' singer, who was in a relationship with Pique for 11 years.
