MCKINNEY, TEXAS: Landon Bourque, a 15-year-old 10th-grade student at Heritage High School in Frisco ISD in Texas, has died after being hit by a truck while riding his bicycle to school on Wednesday morning.

On August 9, Bourque was crossing Independence Parkway at George Washington Drive, near Roach Middle School, around 5.30 am when the truck struck him. The driver stopped and tried to help him, but he did not survive the crash, NBC5 reported.

Who is Landon Bourque?

Landon was a loved member of the Heritage Coyotes football team and the campus community. “Landon was a beloved member of the campus community.

His loss will be felt by the Coyote family and our thoughts go out to the Bourque family and loved ones,” the school said in a statement to the outlet.

Landon had been cycling to Heritage High School on the first day of the school year, according to a statement from the Frisco Independent School District.

“Heritage teachers, students, and parents were briefed early this morning and counselors are on campus addressing the immediate needs of students,” the statement continued.

'The driver stopped and rendered aid'

“The driver stopped and rendered aid but the victim did not survive,” McKinney Police Department said.

Some parents told the station that Bourque was a member of the Heritage Coyotes football team and that many of them were dropping their children for practice at the school when the crash happened.

The police are still investigating the crash and have not determined who was at fault. They removed a damaged bike and a pair of headphones from the scene.

'You’ve gotta slow down. You gotta slow down'

The charges against the driver are not known yet. Some of the drivers who witnessed the crash told the publication that the intersection is dangerous and that there should be more police patrols and lights in the area, especially with two large schools nearby.

“You gotta think, that could have been your kid. That could have been your niece, your nephew, that could have been your daughter, your son, a grandson, or whatever."

"You’ve gotta slow down. You gotta slow down. I know these streets, they don’t have a lot of lights and everything, but there’s no reason [to be] going this fast in residential areas you know?” said a driver. A witness also said that the crash happened before the crossing guards arrived at the middle school.
