Summer Walker, 27, is one of those rare musicians who truly captures the essence of R&B. The singer has been known for her honesty and love for her work. She made headlines for claiming she "got played" by The Recording Academy because neither of her first two studio albums, 'Over It' and 'Still Over It', received any Grammy nominations.
Walker created a sensation in 2019 with her acclaimed debut album 'Over It', which landed at No 2 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), as per VIBE. 'Still Over It' released in 2021 and received a lot of praise from music reviewers after it dropped. It was also included on a lot of year-end lists.
'Still Over it' was also a commercial smash hit, setting the mark for the greatest number of album streams by a female artiste on Apple Music in just one day. It became Walker's first No 1 album upon release and the highest-charting album from a female R&B singer since Beyonce's Lemonade (2016). It debuted at the top of the US Billboard 200, as per reports. It's surprising that The Recording Academy didn't honor Walker for such well-regarded works, though.
'I feel like I got played'
The Atlanta-native expressed her surprise and dismay at not being given much thought in any of the R&B categories at the Grammy Awards during a conversation with Yung Miami for her 'Caresha Please' podcast. "Honestly, both albums, Over It and Still Over It, really did the numbers," Walker said, adding, "I don’t know. I feel like I got played. The numbers were there. The fans were there. When I pop out for a show, sold out every time."
Walker said that she had good cause to think that she was snubbed, but she also said that any worry about not receiving recognition was tempered by the response and support of her admirers and her increasing fortune. She stated, "I don’t f**king know why they played me. I do know why, but I ain’t gonna go into it. But it’s OK. The love is there, and the money is there. So it’s good."
The 27-year-old has won a number of honors, including a Billboard Music Award for Top R&B Female Artist, an iHeartRadio Music Award for Best New R&B Artist and a Soul Train Music Award for Best New Artist and Album of the Year for 'Over It'.
Who is Summer Walker dating?
Walker also discussed her love life on the podcast. There have been rumors that the singer has been deeply in love with her boyfriend, and her admirers were eager to learn more about him. In 2023, rumors started to circulate that Lil Meech and Summer Walker were the newest "it" couple in Hollywood.
Later, after the actor appeared to confirm it on Instagram, the rumors gained momentum. Meech left a remark on an Instagram post from The Neighbourhood Talk in April that featured a photo of him and an unnamed woman. He mentioned, "This was 2 years ago. Summer is mine." Numerous fans took to social media and called their romance "wild raw and crazy."
Recently, a video surfaced showing Meech FaceTiming Walker while in a car with some friends. In the video, the singer was heard praising the actor and calling him "handsome," for which Meech thanks Walker. That wasn't how some of his firends saw it, and one, in particular, told him to quit being so "lovey-dovey."
'So far it’s great'
Walker shied away from the topic of her connection with Meech on the podcast but said a few words about him, "He's a good man," she acknowledged. Despite the fact that their relationship has long been known to the public, the 'No Love' singer definitely never intended for that to happen. "I wanted at least six months before people started to investigate," she stated. Though she isn't yet aware of the future, the most important thing was that she was enjoying her current relationship. "It’s fresh. You never know what’s going to happen but so far it’s great," she said.
