The 2023 World Cup is just weeks away and Team USA is getting ready. Four years ago it was Team USA who ended up on top, taking home their fourth World Cup title. This year some of the big names from World Cup's past are heading back out on the field to try and add a fifth star to their uniforms.

Many of the big names that fans are familiar with will be heading down under to represent the U.S. in the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Among the stars of the 23-person roster are Megan Rapinoe, Alyssa Naeher, Crystal Dunn, Julie Ertz, and Kelley O'Hara. There are some new faces on the roster as well, all of which will be looking up to the two veterans named as captains for this 2023 World Cup team.

Who is the USWNT captain for the Women's World Cup?

This year the USWNT World Cup team will be led by head coach Vlatko Andonovski. This will be his first World Cup as the USWNT's coach and plans to make it one to remember. He has appointed two skilled and knowledgeable veterans as captains to this team.

The USWNT captains for the 2023 World Cup team are Alex Morgan and Lindsey Horan. Both will be stepping up to fill the shoes of longtime USWNT captain Becky Sauerbrunn who will miss the World Cup due to injury.

Alex Morgan might be the most well-known athlete on the team. Her skills on the field have made her a multi-time award winner including an ESPY for Best Female Athlete in 2019. Morgan has been a part of three World Cup teams already and will be bringing her vast knowledge to the younger members of Team USA this summer.

Lindsey Horan might not be as well known as her captain counterpart, Morgan, but her resume is just as great. She has been on the USWNT since 2013 and appeared in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups and the 2020 Olympic Games. She has over 100 international goals and is a huge presence in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).

Group play will begin on July 20. The U.S. will be in Group E and will play against Vietnam, Netherlands, and Portugal. The U.S. will play its first game on July 21 against Vietnam.
