DECATUR, GEORGIA: In a tragic turn of events that has left Georgia's Towers High School in shock, a man had been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his 17-year-old girlfriend. The victim who was a homecoming queen was remembered by her high school as an "inspiration."

According to the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office, Nakia Dorsey was arrested for shooting and killing Chavez and was also charged with possession of a firearm and two counts of aggravated assault, reported People.

Who was Jayne Salazar-Chavez?

Chavez, 17, was killed after a dispute she had with Dorsey, 24. In a news release issued by the district attorney's office this week, the motive behind the murder stemmed from Dorsey's distress upon discovering that Chavez was romantically involved with another man, Brandon Wilson, 24, who was serving in the Army.

Wilson had returned home for a surprise visit on Veteran's Day in 2022. Upon his surprise arrival, Wilson had noticed a change in her behavior which led him to confront her about a possible secret relationship and "demanded to see her phone."

Wilson then found a suggestive text message from Dorsey which prompted him to contact Dorsey. The situation escalated after Wilson and Chavez returned to her house later that night and were confronted by Dorsey.

In his statement given to investigators, Wilson said he noticed a red laser shining on his face while he and Chavez sat in his car. He then saw a man dressed in black clothing with a firearm aimed at the car. Gunshots ensued and "Wilson turned the car around to leave and the shooter continued to unload into the vehicle," stated the district attorney’s office.

Dorsey fired 20 bullets aiming at Chavez and Wilson

According to the DA's office, " 20 bullets pierced the body of the car." Chavez was shot in the arm and the torso while Wilson was shot in the leg. Officers then found the girl laying on the ground next to the vehicle at a nearby gas station. She later succumbed to her injuries while Wilson was transported to a local hospital.

The victim's mother Amparo Salazar said her daughter had planned to join the Army after her graduation. In November 2022, Tower High School honored her with a social media post. "Rest in Peace our THS Homecoming Queen. Jayne, you were such an inspiration and a great student leader. We will miss you my dear," Principal Tiffany M Sims wrote on social media.
