OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA: Kendall Segers, a popular DJ community activist and a father-of-four, was killed in a brutal attack in Oakland, California, on Sunday, September 9 morning.

He was one of the four victims of gun violence in the city. Segers, also known as 'DJ Pnut,' was shot multiple times in the back while eating at a taqueria with his friends.

How was Kendall Segers killed?

"The bullet went through his back and pierced his lung and heart and then he got run over," Segers’ mother Kelli told Fox2."You’re taking away a mother’s child, for what?," she said.

Soon after getting shot, he was run over by a vehicle. Segers was rushed to a hospital, but he did not survive.

Was Kendall Segers married?

Segers was 27 years old and had four children, two of whom were infants.

His mother Kelli said he was an innocent bystander who got caught in the crossfire. She questioned the motive behind the senseless killing of her son.

His wife Blanca Aguilar said he was a devoted father and that it was heartbreaking that his little ones would be celebrating their first birthday without their father.

"All I am asking for them [shooters] to turn themselves in," she said.

Segers was well-known in the Oakland community for his music and his activism.

He organized events to promote peace and unity among the youth. He also mentored aspiring DJs and artists.

His friends and family described him as a loving father, a talented musician, and a positive influence, as per CBS News.

How did Kendall Segers' friends and the community react to the shooting?

Seneca Scott, a community activist, said Segers’ death was a “profound impact” and a “tragedy” for Oakland.

"Every individual who falls victim to violence or harm in Oakland is an unequivocal tragedy," he said.

"The whole Oakland is terrible right now. It'll never be the same," Segers' friend DJ ButtaSmoove told CBS. The friend revealed he was just one block away when shots rang out.

"All I heard were gunshots, literally on this same block," Segers' friend said, adding that he moved to the shooting site telling himself "I hope it's not somebody I know."

But, "It was Pnut," he reportedly said, amid rolling tears. He had taught Pnut how to DJ last year. They would spend five days together performing.

"He just wanted to be great and rich," ButtaSmoove said as he was concerned for his four children. He would always be like..."Diapers and formula. Diapers and formula,'" ButtaSmoove said.
