Together with the Ying Yang Twins, Chief Keef delivered a fiery performance of his 2014 hit song 'Faneto'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a shocking piece of news that has gotten many fans excited, BET announced that rapper Chief Keef will be part of the performance lineup for their award show. The rapper made his debut for the performance that took place on Sunday evening, June 25, 2023.

Despite his popularity, it is strange that Chief Keef has never performed before tonight. But the true reason behind his absence was the extended ban he was placed under around 10 years ago, which prohibited him from attending or performing. Since then, this is his first attendance at the award show which fans are looking forward to.

Why was Chief Keef banned from BET?

BET or Black Entertainment Awards banned Chief Keef 10 years ago after the 2013 ceremony and no one knew the reason behind the network's decision. Until Keef replied to a fan on Twitter back in 2014. In the tweet conversation, the fan had mentioned him and pointed out his absence at the awards ceremony to which he replied, "BET banned me a long time Ago Becuz I didn’t attend 106 Cuz I ain’t f**kin feel like it! I was gettin high," as per Hollywood Life.

He said he was blacklisted by the Black Entertainment Network for not showing up when he was invited as a guest for the '106 & Park' show. Keef was apparently not happy with the fact that he was not a part of the lineup which had artists like Chris Brown and Kendrick Lamar and was just invited as a guest.

Chief Keef performed at BET after the ban lift

As Chief Keef delivered the much-needed performance at the award show, it appeared like the prohibition on his attending the BET Awards had been lifted. Together with the Ying Yang Twins, the rapper delivered a fiery performance of his 2014 hit song 'Faneto' that had the entire crowd dancing and on their feet.

The rapper's last album came out in December last year called 'Finally Rich: Complete Edition', an additional take on his 2012 album. The album contains a total of 22 songs and a feature with Wiz Khalifa as well.

'Can't even recognize the song'

While Chief Keef's performance was much awaited by both celebrities and fans alike, there were mixed reactions to his 2023 version of 'Faneto'. A viewer of BET Awards tweeted in response to his performance video, "This performance was horrible and they are still completely off beat. I don't know what yall think is great but this is such a disappointment." Other fans were unhappy with the overly censored TV broadcast of the performance which basically muted a word or two at least in every line. One fan tweeted, "All them damn edits …I hardly recognize that song." Another one said, "feels like Quapaw casino running the BET’s with this censored nonsense. Can’t even listen to the full lyrics anywhere no more." A fan questioned the use of censoring in hip-hop at all the genre knows no rules and boundaries and has historically relied on curses. They said, "Bruh what's the point of doing clean Version for hip-hop."

Some fans had issues with the crowd not showing any enthusiastic reaction to the performance which was much deserved by Keef. One fan went on to say, "Oh nah. Crowd ain’t passin the vibe check. This how crunk we got when this came on." Another one tweeted, "Is faneto not a classic amongst celebs? Lol they out the loop like that?"

Regardless, fans welcomed Chief Keef for his first performance, one of them saying, "Finally they let my boy in the door of the BET awards Just imagine you cheering for someone who paved the way for all these new age rappers & some of the rappers that getting awards. Really the most influential rapper of the DECADE."
