Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras went off with four hits against his former team as St. Louis flipped the script on the Cubs in the MLB London Series.

Very little has gone right for the Cardinals in 2023, so it didn't feel like a huge surprise when the Cubs outscored St. Louis 13-1 in the first 10 innings of the MLB London Series.

Just when it looked like the Cardinals were doomed to reach a new low, Willson Contreras delivered a four-hit day and led the team to a 7-5 comeback victory to even the series overseas.

Willson's 4-for-4 day included a double and two runs against his former team, giving him the last laugh in the second of four series between the Cardinals and Cubs this season.

It was the second appearance for Willson with three hits or more in the last four games. He hadn't managed three hits in any of his previous 66 appearances for St. Louis.

Willson Contreras helped Cardinals era 4-0 deficit to Cubs

After a 9-1 win on Saturday, the Cubs started Sunday's outing with the same sort of swagger, scoring four runs in the first.

However, Contreras delivered the first hit of the game for St. Louis and went on to score in the second. He scored again after hitting a double to lead off the fifth as the Cardinals took a commanding 7-4 lead.

The win over Chicago improves St. Louis to 32-45, leaving them with plenty of work to do to claw their way back into contention in the NL Central and avoid being sellers at the trade deadline. They are 8.5 games out of first place, which is currently held by the Reds.
