LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The former SHIELD chief, Nick Fury was at war on all fronts in the second episode of ‘Secret Invasion.’ In a flashback scene, he was seen promising Skrulls a new home and in the present, he is shown running away from a problem that he helped create. Fury is now a wanted man worldwide as the Russian authorities speculate about his role in the blasts in Moscow. He manages to escape with Talos but later asks his Skrull friend, “Tell me something I don’t know.”
To his horror, Fury learns that there are millions of Skrulls living on Earth because Talos invited them here when they were fleeing their home planet. This is a secret that unsettles Fury who now believes that he’s fighting not just a handful of Skrulls but an entire army that can easily shape-shift into humans. If it weren't for Fury, Earth’s fate would have been much safer.
Never make a promise you can’t keep
It's the year 1997. Nick Fury has only recently begun to learn the extent of various species out there in the universe. He has a Skrull friend in Talos who is willing to help him and convinces the rest of his kind to help Fury in his cause to save humans. And in turn, Fury along with Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel will save the Skrulls from persecution and find them a new home. It’s a noble attempt at alliance between two species where Skrulls keep up their end of the bargain. But Fury takes it for granted, forgets about his promise, and never fulfills his end of the bargain to protect the Skrulls.
Fury is seeking Skrull agents and finds a young Skrull who has just arrived on Earth after his father was killed by the Trees. This young lad is Gravik, who later becomes Fury’s biggest nemesis. Gravik piloted a ship on his own and made it to Earth. Varra thinks he could be a good fit for their network and requests Fury to talk to him. Fury forms a bond with Gravik and brings him in. Gravik listens to Fury’s every word and falls for it. But Fury who fails to keep his promise, puts the entire human race in jeopardy. He says, “It’s my fight” but Fury will need all the help he can because, at the moment, no one’s with him and the former SHIELD chief has been fired by James Rhodes.
Why is Nick Fury hesitant about calling the ‘Avengers’?
When Fury meets Rhodes after the latter is summoned by the heads of different nations, he states that bringing the Avengers into this debacle will be a grave mistake. Fury believes that Skrulls are too powerful and might shapeshift into Avengers which will leave no scope for humanity to survive. It will be extremely chaotic and the humans will lose the war against the Skrulls. Fury wants to fight against the Skrulls by himself and asks for Rhodes’ support. But when Rhodes fires Fury from the job, the black-eye-patched daredevil reminds him, “I'm Nick Fury. Even when I'm out, I'm in.”
